PWN Wine & Words

PWN is proud to present Wine & Words on August 10 from 7:00-8:30, featuring Valerie Wise. She will be discussing her book, “Fit for Trial”. Here is her description of the book –
“FIT FOR TRIAL is told from the perspective of a mother who lost her son twice. Once to the perils of serious mental illness and then to the Criminal Justice System which in the U.S. has become the largest institution for the mentally ill especially those who are poor and people of color, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color).
The book is a way to raise awareness about the plight of mentally ill POC as experienced through the family lens. Given recent events in the U.S. where there have been several Black men killed by police, the knowledge that a high percentage of those men (and women) had mental illness reinforces the dilemmas that their families face: How do I get help for my loved one without putting him at risk of being seriously harmed or even killed by the very ones I am asking for help?
The book is also an attempt to be a voice for families with little to no resources and even less hope. The author believes that positive change is still possible and the book can contribute in some small way to that. ”
